San Rafael Arcangel - Missions of California Educational ProjectsFounded 20th in the mission chain on December 14, 1817. San Rafael Arcángel (named for Saint Raphael the Archangel, patron of good health) was originally planned to be a sub-mission of Mission San Francisco de Asis. It was established as a hospital to treat those who grew ill from the damp weather.
Great for introducing students to California's mission history and emphasizing the importance of the missions to the founding of California (1769 to 1823).
