The Cable Car was invented in San Francisco by Andrew Hallidie in 1873, by 1893 112 miles (180 kilometers) of cable lines were operating in San Francisco and were also operating in many cities throughout the United States. Today San Francisco is the only city in the United States operating this type of vehicle. The San Francisco Municipal Railway operates 67 cable cars on grades up to 21% on over 17 miles (27 kilometers) of track.
